Despite being the most resource-intensive data initiative an organisation can embark on, with minimal immediate return on investment (ROI), effective data management is indispensable. Without it, the organisation would face challenges in efficiently handling data products, and high-ROI initiatives such as data analytics and monetisation could underperform.


The activities involved in data management can be categorised as follows:


Data collection, enrichment and integration


Data collection is the systematic acquisition of information from various sources, tailored to specific variables of interest. This can be accomplished through methods such as surveys, interviews, observations, or leveraging existing databases. Data enrichment is the process of augmenting, refining and improving raw data. It involves supplementing a dataset with relevant information from secondary sources, thereby enhancing the data's value and facilitating more comprehensive analysis. Data integration is the process of combining data from diverse sources into a cohesive, unified view. This process is crucial in a range of scenarios, both commercial (such as when two similar companies need to consolidate their databases) and scientific (for instance, merging research results from different bioinformatics repositories). It empowers analytics tools to yield effective, insightful data analysis.


Collectively, data collection, enrichment, and integration constitute the cornerstone of contemporary data-driven decision-making and strategic planning. To achieve success, the following steps should be implemented:

Identify relevant and reliable internal and external data sources for the company’s products and services, such as transactional, customer, market, and regulatory data.

Data governance


Data governance is a comprehensive management approach that ensures the availability, usability, integrity, and security of data utilised in an organisation. It comprises processes, roles, policies, standards, and metrics that ensure the effective and efficient use of information, enabling an organisation to achieve its goals. It provides a mechanism to exercise positive control over the processes and methods used by data stewards and data custodians to handle data.


To establish a robust data governance framework, the following needs to be planned:


  • Data quality. Establish standards and processes to maintain data accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and consistency, and define methods to monitor and improve data quality over time.

  • Data security. Deploy robust measures to safeguard sensitive data from unauthorised access, breaches, and cyber threats.

  • Data privacy. Implement policies and procedures to govern data access, use, and sharing, ensuring compliance with regulations such as GDPR and CCPA, as well as industry standards, through encryption, access controls, and anonymisation techniques.

  • Data roles and operating model. Define clear roles and responsibilities for DBAs, data analysts, stewards, owners, custodians, admins, managers, engineers, and users. Establish an operating model outlining how these roles collaborate to achieve data objectives, supported by processes, technologies, and governance structures.

  • Business process management (BPM) and risk management. Optimise data-involved processes for efficiency and effectiveness, reducing errors and enhancing data quality. Identify and mitigate data-related risks, including those concerning privacy, security, and compliance, to maintain data integrity and reliability for informed decision-making.

  • Compliance reporting and regulatory requirements. Incorporate provisions for compliance reporting and industry-specific regulations into the data strategy. Stay abreast of regulatory changes and adapt the strategy accordingly to ensure ongoing compliance.

  • Audits and assessments. Conduct regular audits and assessments to identify and address security vulnerabilities, ensuring continuous improvement in data governance practices.


Data infrastructure and architecture


Data infrastructure encompasses the digital foundations that underpin data operations, spanning ingestion, transport, storage, processing, analysis, visualisation, and dissemination. Data analytics and insights

Insight generation, on the other hand, is the outcome of data analytics. It involves deriving actionable insights and valuable knowledge from the analysed data. These insights provide a deeper understanding, help identify opportunities and risks, support evidence-based decision-making, and ultimately contribute to achieving business objectives.


In essence, data analytics is the systematic approach to analysing data, while insight generation is the outcome of that analysis, providing actionable intelligence to guide organisational decisions and strategies. This entails applying analytical methodologies and machine learning tools to extract insights and value from data, making it one of the most high-yield activities achievable through data utilisation. Key steps to facilitate this process include:


  • Develop capabilities in advanced analytics, including descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics.

  • Implement data visualisation tools and techniques to communicate insights to stakeholders effectively.


Roles under analytics include data analysts, data scientists, business analysts, data storytellers, data consumers, machine learning scientists, and machine learning engineers.


Data culture and enablement


Data culture embodies the mindset and behaviours within an organisation that cultivate data-driven decision-making, innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. It starts at the top, with leadership demonstrating a commitment to data-driven decision-making, and extends throughout the organisation. A strong data culture ensures that everyone understands the importance and business value of data.


Data enablement focuses on improving data usability by deploying appropriate technologies and tools. It entails empowering individuals within the business with the support and tools they need to harness trusted data to achieve tangible business outcomes responsibly. While data enablement is typically overseen by a data engineer or team, the successful implementation of a data strategy necessitates commitment from all members of the organisation, including frontline staff.


To ensure the attainment of data culture and enablement within the data strategy, the following steps can be pursued:


  • Define data literacy and culture objectives. Establish clear goals for advancing data culture and literacy within the organisation.

  • Conduct a data culture assessment. Evaluate the current state of the organisation’s data culture to pinpoint areas requiring improvement.

  • Host leadership workshops and planning sessions. Engage leaders in workshops and planning sessions to ensure they grasp the importance of a data-driven culture and can lead by example.

  • Communication and execution. Communicate the importance of data culture and literacy to all employees and implement the plans developed.

Projections suggest that by the end of this decade, the market will soar to US$15.5 billion, representing a remarkable compound annual growth rate of 22.1%.


Data innovation involves harnessing data to forge new avenues of business value. This could encompass devising novel data-analysis methodologies, crafting data-driven products or services, or discovering innovative ways to optimise business processes. In today’s data-centric business landscape, data innovation is a cornerstone of growth and competitiveness.


To optimise data monetisation and innovation, the following strategies can be employed:


  • Explore opportunities to monetise data assets through new products, services, or strategic partnerships.

  • Cultivate an innovation-driven culture by encouraging experimentation and the exploration of novel data-driven business models.
